While mild traumatic brain injury can be a very heterogenic condition, the visual and vestibular systems are commonly impacted. Visual dysfunction, photophobia, and vestibular symptoms go hand in hand with vestibular and vestibular-ocular neurobiology. From objective, feasible sideline measures to intricate vestibular ocular reflex evaluations, optometry may play an important supportive role in return-to-play decisions. Given the number of clinical tests that can assess visual and vestibular skills affected by traumatic brain injury, it is possible that optometry also stands to play an important role in the development of biomarkers related to concussion.
