Since the beginning of human space exploration, the eyes and vision of astronauts have been evaluated before and immediately after missions. On-orbit ocular data collections were initiated in 2009 after the discovery of Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS), a condition which induces ocular and brain anatomical changes in >70% of astronaut eyes during long-duration spaceflight and poses risk to vision and long-term health. Since then, NASA has evolved its unique ocular telemedicine techniques to obtain anatomical and visual data from deployed crewmembers. These data are critical in detecting clinically significant SANS signs, symptoms, and visual performance decrements.
