The primary eye care provider plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that can result in significant vision loss or even loss of life. Neuro-ophthalmic diseases frequently fit into these categories. The optometrist needs to understand and identify the diseases that cause optic nerve swelling and vision loss/distortion. Topics in this lecture include demyelinating, ischemic, inflammatory and infectious optic neuropathies. Diagnosis, treatment, imaging and follow up will be discussed.
